Welcome to Kiota

Your retreat
in Tanzania

A different way of living

Kiota, which means “nest” in Kiswahili, welcomes you to the southern slopes of Mount Meru, the third-highest mountain on the African continent, to awaken your senses.

This peaceful retreat is operated by a small team committed to welcoming travellers to a relaxing environment. Each of us has a unique story, touch and skills. After years of working together, we call ourselves a family, aiming at touching the hearts of those who come to stay with us.

It is the beauty within us that makes it possible for us to recognize the beauty around us. The question is not what you look at but what you see.

- Henry David Thoreau

Flora

The Chef

One of my favourite things to do is gathering seasonal local ingredients, experimenting with flavours and seeing the expressions of the people that eat the food I prepare.

Chenga

The Handyman

Whenever I am needed, I am there. A pipe breaks, I’ll fix it. Or do you wish to see a bush baby? I’ll show it to you. I love singing and I am a member of a choir; would you like to listen to my songs? I’ll sing them to you.

Yusuf

The Gardener

The lettuce you eat is the lettuce I grew.  I love gardening, as I learned to understand how much food is connected with our well-being and health.

Dora

The Allrounder

From housekeeping to assisting with cooking and at times, collecting the wild spinach with Flora. I was born in the Pare Mountains, the home of the Oysternut, an indigenous climber. So I know best how to integrate it into traditional foods.
